Save the words: Adopt and spread a word

savethewordsintro

Every year, thousands of words drop from the dictionaries due to the ruthless and sophisticated laws of the economy of space, i.e. there’s not enough space!, so some criteria need to be applied. In this case: no usage, no space. That’s why Oxford Dictionaries launched the site SAVETHEWORDS, half-jokingly half-seriously, in which we can adopt and spread neglected words so that they re-enter the world of lexicography. To do so, you need to register and have your sense of humor ready. How can we spread the word? This is how:

We can also get t-shirts printed with our brand new adopted word and we can add more words adrift to their site by email (info@savethewords.com).

Yeah, snigger but you might learn a word or two…plus, feel the responsibility! ;)

It’d be great if -now more seriously- users could:

  • Save the words
  • Tag/wrap/comment
  • Rate the words
  • Send multimedia in which people are using that word in real life (now, you -Oxford UP guys- wanted to launch some humorous site…don’t drop it halfway through and let the joke grow up).
  • My 0.2 cts: APIs! Integrate it with other apps out there such as Forvo and or Wordie!!! (please for a real mashup web NOW!)

[Via some Twitter contact or friend, sorry...I didn't bookmark it :S]

I just adopted the following word:

PS: Anything like this for the Spanish language? (yeah, well, Diccionario Real Academia doesn’t count, does it? ;) )
