Being obsessed with impact factor (IF), who cares about teaching index as a variable for academic productivity? (when the heck are they going to differentiate and thus differently assess between a research profile and a teaching profile?)
Brilliant cartoon strip by PhD Comics my dear friend and fellow blogger Bart Bonamie sent me:
(Although the # of taught classes doesn’t prove you’re a good teacher either or does it? What -do you think- proves that? Student surveys? And what happens when it seems that you’re a good teacher? Nothing. What happens when it seems you aren’t that good? Nothing. So why the effort?. Just thinking aloud here, sorry.)

Reminds me of the days when every course would start with a needs analysis, then we’d teach the book! Perhaps these still are those days???
Have a good xmas
Nik
Having been through somewhat of a rough period as far as teaching is concerned (yeah…I call teaching language classes with 70+ people in front of you quite rough – especially since it’s all about quality and not quantity, of course), I haven’t been in the best of moods, lately. And then they publish a comic like this one – to cheer you up, I’m sure, hehe. Jorge Cham hit the nail on the head with this one, though, and it makes you wonder…Q: WHY? A: Because we’ve all become slaves of the Almighty A1 Publication.
Still, I hope you’ll all enjoy your end of the year holidays!
@Bart Bonamie: Almighty A1 Publication! LOL! Have a nice Xmas too.
@Nik Peachey: Probably…I can name many places where they’re still doing that
Have a nice Xmas and a -still- better 2009, Nik!
